Why Is There So Much Outrage?

Outrage is a pervasive force in today’s world, easily found in conversations, online platforms, and social interactions. Many attribute its prevalence to the instantaneous sharing of beliefs and emotions on social media, while others point to the contentious nature of modern politics or a shift in cultural norms. Regardless of its origin, the climate of outrage can envelop us all, shaping our responses and attitudes. For Christians, succumbing to this atmosphere distorts our witness and undermines the vital message the world desperately needs to hear.

The Roots of Outrage and Anxiety

Often, outrage and anxiety stem from feelings of marginalization – a sense that something we value is being threatened or taken away. This emotional reaction is tied closely to loss, whether it is actual or perceived. Even the mere impression of loss can trigger strong emotions, prompting us to seek out others who share our perspective. As these individual feelings converge, they can escalate into collective anxiety and outrage, especially when fueled by perceptions rather than reality. This dynamic may lead to the creation of a false narrative, fostering destructive tribalism that stands in direct opposition to the spirit of Christ.

Turning Our Focus Inward

Outrage often arises when we focus on external circumstances instead of examining our own hearts. Scripture provides guidance in Psalm 139:23, which says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” This verse reminds us that God knows our innermost thoughts and desires to reveal the source of our anxiety and outrage. He invites us to bring our troubles to Him first, prioritizing the state of our hearts over external concerns.

Finding Security and Peace in Christ

When our thoughts are dominated by worldly concerns, it is often because we are seeking security in temporal things rather than embracing the eternal Kingdom we have in Christ. The security found in Christ eliminates the need to contend with flesh and blood, diminishing both anxiety and outrage. This peace, which surpasses all understanding, is precisely what the world longs to see in Christians.

Demonstrating Christ’s Peace

By embodying a life filled with the love of Jesus Christ, Christians can offer a compelling witness to nonbelievers. The peace we experience can inspire others to desire what we have, leading them to discover that God’s love works from the inside out. Ultimately, this love brings the same peace to others that we ourselves have received.
