What does it mean to take a spiritual look in the mirror? It means looking at the truth of our lives. What keeps us from doing this? We can be afraid of what we might see. We can be afraid of our faults. What we see about ourselves can cause us to get down on ourselves. It can be much easier to ignore the truth of our lives. It can even be easier to judge and criticize others than to be critics of ourselves.
We cannot know God without knowing ourselves. It is possible to see God’s hand in the creations of the heavens and the earth. Yet, God decided to reveal himself through His Son. The Son reveals God to His creations through His grace on the cross and resurrection. The revelation of all God gives us happens in the heart of the believer.
Why shouldn’t we be afraid to take a close look at ourselves? Because God has given us his grace in Jesus Christ. When Jesus said on the cross, “It is finished,” He meant that His forgiveness was, and continues to be, given to us. When we look in the mirror and see where we have failed to love God and the people He puts in our lives, the Holy Spirit shows us His grace. God makes Himself known from the inside out.
God said, “Do not fear for I am with you.” Isaiah 41:10 The loving God who has you covered in Christ is there, in the mirror, with you. You can confront your failures fearlessly knowing you are forgiven in Christ. Moreover, you will find the power to love in the name of God, living as He intended. The mirror is a blessing from the Father through Christ.
