As Christians, God calls us to respond to Him and do good things with our lives according to His will. But from time to time, we are all tempted to give up. We can become tired, frustrated, or even fed up. We want to do the will of God in our lives, but it can seem overwhelming or just too difficult. However, if we give up, we may not reap the harvest God intends for us.
Perseverance is central to our Christian life. Throughout the New Testament, we can find passages that encourage us to persevere such as Galatians 6:9. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Yet, we can be tempted to give up on our sanctification, our relationships, our church family, God’s mission, and seeking God’s will for our lives.
It is not usually the easy things that we give up on. It is the most difficult. When this happens, we can become disappointed with ourselves and with the results of our failure to see things through. Yet, all the while, God is there speaking to us through the Word, encouraging us to keep going.
Where do we get the strength to persevere? The grace of God gives us power that we can find inside ourselves. God reminds us of what He has given us through Christ – a new creation with a clean heart. We have righteousness given to us through the touch of God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. It is here we find the strength to persevere. When we hear the words, “Let us not become weary in doing good,” we are able to say “yes” and move toward our harvest.
