Guarding Our Hearts

Is guarding the heart underrated? It is likely so. We tend to believe that the most valuable aspects of our lives are external possessions. We have keys, passwords, and burglar alarms—all of which protect our external valuables. While these measures are important, they do not compare to the significance of having eternal life through God's gift of Jesus Christ's death and resurrection. The temporary, physical gifts from God are incomparable to the eternal gift of His love in our lives.

During our earthly existence, we make decisions using both our intellect and emotions. Since God resides within us, He influences all aspects of our being. The extent to which our lives reflect God's will depends on how we are influenced by the new creation in Christ within our hearts. This underscores the necessity of guarding our hearts throughout our life's journey.

In Philippians 4:7, Paul states, “The peace of God that transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” God protects us by placing us within a community of others who walk with Him. He created us for community, which we find in His church.

Additionally, God safeguards us by guiding us to His Word. The Holy Spirit communicates with us through the Scriptures. Furthermore, God guards our hearts through the reception of Holy Communion and contemplation of the significance of our baptism. As baptized children of God, let us respond to His nurturing and protection of our hearts and minds.
